Caw Community Playgroup, Londonderry

A registered charity run by six volunteers, Caw Community Playgroup has been running in the Nelson Drive Estate in the Waterside area of Londonderry for over 30 years.  Operating in the face of high deprivation, the Playgroup currently offers 20 places per year to pre-school children in the locality and aims to tackle the health and educational inequalities children face through early intervention – developmental programmes to promote social, physical and emotional learning.  CCP sought assistance with the purchase of role play items; toys to promote numeracy and develop fine motor skills; arts and crafts materials; and books.  Alderman Niree McMorris praised the Playgroup for their work and support they give to local parents.  She added that all grant aid was critical following budget cuts and, on her recommendation, the Committee agreed a grant of £1,000 for this “really worthwhile” cause.
