Offering a ‘one stop shop’ in Maghera (11 Main Street) where information, records, publications, photographs, memorabilia, folk memories and artefacts, connected with the history of the town and the surrounding districts can be collected, preserved, displayed and consulted in a venue to the public, Maghera Heritage Centre applied for financial assistance with the publication of a book by a well-known historian, Jim Hunter. ‘Along the Banks of the Bann’ traces the Lower Bann and its tributaries from Lough Neagh to the Barmouth and tells the story of people and places for the past to the present. The Secretary advised that he had seen a preview of the book – which he believed to be a valuable contribution to local history, and on his recommendation the Committee agreed a grant of £1,000 towards a print run of 500 copies.
