A non-selective, co-educational 11-18 Post-Primary school, Magherafelt High has an enrolment of 625 pupils from a wide geographical area (covering a significant proportion of County Londonderry and extending into Counties Antrim and Tyrone) and includes a number of migrant children from Syria, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Somalia and Eritrea. The School offers a safe and stable environment and aims to ensure that everyone is given every opportunity to succeed. With recent news that their budget would be reduced by 1.6%, the Principal was worried that 20 children who have selected GCSE Moving Image Arts will struggle to undertake their coursework without the necessary equipment and there is no capacity in the budget to purchase new kit. The Committee agreed a grant of £1,000 from the NW Schools’ Fund for the purchase of four camcorders (and memory sticks) so that pupils who do not have good quality smart phones would not be disadvantaged.
