Set up in 2016, the NWIA offers a neutral, safe space to connect, learn and build meaningful relationships. A team of volunteers (the Association has no paid staff) plan and deliver activities and projects providing unique opportunities to educate; dispel misconceptions/myths; explore commonalties and celebrate diversity; tackle prejudicial attitudes and negative media; and facilitate understanding and appreciation of different faiths and cultural backgrounds. Alderman McMorris was familiar with this self-funded organisation which, she believed, now had over 1,000 members – and was seeking to move premises to make its services more accessible. With her support, the Committee had no hesitation in agreeing a grant of £1,200 towards a selection of gym equipment (listed in the application) to help young refugees to socialise while improving their physical fitness and mental/emotional wellbeing.
