Originally established in 1999, since July 2022 Open Doors Club has been an independent voluntary group dedicated to the most vulnerable, disabled and disadvantaged people living in the rural community of Swatragh and surrounding villages – some 30+ members ranging in ages from 14-50 with different disabilities, physical, learning, autism, dyslexia and downs syndrome. The Club planned to conclude their summer term of activities with a special party celebrating 25 years in existence – with families and friends joining in to enjoy a great evening’s entertainment. Cllr Brian McGuigan spoke highly of the Club and the fantastic work their volunteers do with disabled people and, on his recommendation, the Committee readily agreed a grant of £950 towards a karaoke machine and microphone set, Apple i-pad, sporting equipment and catering pump Flasks – which can be used at the function and in Music & Dance and other classes and events. Margaret McFlynn (Chair) e-mailed on 30/09/2024 obo the group to “thank The Honourable The Irish Society for their funding, in enabling us to purchase much needed and essential equipment. We really appreciate this and our members will really benefit and also have great enjoyment”. Feedback from the Club confirmed that “The equipment is most beneficial for our group’s health and wellbeing in staying connected. They love singing and the Karaoke machine is a great way for our members to learn new songs through YouTube and Makaton. They are very competitive, love sport, have great fun with the Bean Bags and Target Mats. The Cones are essential for our activities inside and out. The Microphone is a great way in keeping everyone posted, especially when playing games as you can image the noise! The Pump Flasks are a much safer way for members to help themselves to tea/coffee compared to using kettles/teapots. The i-Pad is a very environmental way for our group to retain important information, confidential records and policies, submitting funding applications, efficient book-keeping, taking photos and promoting all activities through Social Media. Open Doors Club will be forever grateful and would like to thank THTIS, most sincerely, for their funding as this is extremely important for the continuing success of our group, especially when we are providing activities for the most vulnerabe who are usually the most forgotten in our society. Thank you again for your funding”.
