Portstewart Nursery Unit

Attached to Portstewart Primary School, Portstewart Nursery Unit offers full time provision for 26 pre-school aged children; an increasing number on previous years and many of whom receive free school meals and come from a socially deprived background.  They believe in child-led and enquiry-based practice, and encourage lots of outdoor play and learning.  As a result, and post-pandemic, PNU sought funding to enhance the provision of their outdoor areas – in this case by constructing a digging area to include a covered gravelled area with ‘ride on’ diggers.  Learning that the Unit intends to develop community connections by inviting local mother and toddler groups to use this outdoor space, the Committee agreed to an Irish Society grant of £1,000 as requested to cover the cost of the gravel and carrying out groundworks.
